Matthew 28:18 -20 NIV
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
We believe the Bible is the final authoritative basis of our faith and value system.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16
Faith is the means by which believers come to God and put their trust in Him for salvation every day of their life.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Hebrews 11:1-2
There are individuals who interpret certain Pauline texts to prohibit women from taking roles in church leadership. However, the Bible does not categorically ban women from pastoral or leadership roles in ministry or in the church. Instead, the Bible records numerous stories of women in ministry and leadership. In fact, the Bible recognizes several women as prophets, apostles and at least one woman as a deacon.
Here are some arguments for women in church leadership:
1. Scriptural Arguments
* The Bible does not explicitly prohibit women from serving in leadership positions. In fact, there are examples of women serving as leaders, such as Deborah (Judges 4-5), Huldah (2 Kings 22:14), and Phoebe (Romans 16:1-2).
* The apostle Paul's words in 1 Timothy 2:12, "I do not permit a woman to teach or assume authority over a man," are often interpreted as referring to the specific cultural context of the time, rather than a universal ban on women's leadership.
* Some argue that the apostle Paul's emphasis on equality in Christ (Galatians 3:28) and the call to submit to one another (Ephesians 5:21) suggest that gender should not be a barrier to leadership.
2. Theological arguments
* The concept of "headship" in Ephesians 5:23 is often misinterpreted as male dominance. A more accurate interpretation is that Jesus Christ is the head of the church, and all believers, regardless of gender, are called to submit to him.
* The role of the Holy Spirit is often overlooked in discussions of church leadership. The Spirit is equally present in both men and women, and it is the Spirit who empowers and gifts believers for ministry.
3. Historical Arguments
* Women have played significant roles in the early Christian church, such as Phoebe, Junia, and Priscilla (Romans 16:1-2, 16:7, Romans 16:3-5). These women were not limited to traditional female roles or submissive positions.
* The early Christian church was a diverse and egalitarian community where people from different backgrounds and cultures came together to worship and serve God. Women were valued for their contributions and played important roles in the church.
4. Practical Arguments
* Women bring unique perspectives and experiences to the table, which can enrich the church's decision-making processes and ministry.
* Women can serve as role models for young girls and women, inspiring them to pursue their own callings and ministries.
* The inclusion of women in leadership positions can help bridge cultural and socioeconomic divides within the church.
5. Contextual Arguments
* Contextualizing biblical passages like 1 Timothy 2:11-12 and 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 within their historical and cultural context can lead to a more nuanced understanding of their meaning.
* The emphasis on equality and mutuality in Paul's letters suggests that these passages may not be meant to establish a universal ban on women's leadership.
As a woman serving as a minister, author, and Bible teacher, I've encountered closed doors only due to my female gender. One day, I stumbled upon a quote that resonated deeply into my soul: "She couldn't keep her colors inside the lines, so she drew new lines!" It felt like a personal message written specifically to me.
From that inspiration, New Lines of Faith Ministry was born that day. It's the embodiment of my divine calling to follow Jesus and share the gospel freely, unbound by conventional constraints. As partners in this mission, my husband and I are dedicated to spreading the message of faith without walls.
I ask for your prayers that our ministry continues to uplift and transform lives, breaking through all barriers that stand in our way. ~ Glenda Durham, Founder
